A driver fit in isolation can still leave a hole in the carry ladder three clubs later. We treat the bag as one connected set of numbers, and everything below is judged against where it needs to land relative to the club on either side of it, not just against its own line on the launch monitor.

Every driver session here produces two numbers, and the second one decides the outcome. Carry tells you how far the good ones go. Dispersion tells you what the bad ones cost. We fit the combination, because scorecards are written by both.

The Trade

Four Yards Against Twelve Fairways

A typical driver session throws up a decision that looks like this. Build A carries 248 with a left-to-right spread of forty-eight yards. Build B carries 244 with a spread of thirty-one. Golfers instinctively reach for A because the number is bigger. We put both on the screen and let you sit with it.

Over eighteen holes, seventeen yards of tightened spread is worth several shots that stayed in play, and four yards of carry is worth roughly nothing at all. The maths is not close. It is nevertheless the hardest conversation in the bay, because carry is the number people have been trained to care about.

We are not doctrinaire about it. If you are a low-spin player who genuinely finds fairways with anything, chasing carry makes sense. But the default assumption in this shop is that the driver's job is to leave you a shot into the green, and everything else is decoration.

What We Change

Six Dials, Turned in Order

Head Model

Mass distribution and face design set the baseline for how forgiving the club is and where the centre of gravity sits. We start here with your current shaft in place so the comparison is clean.

Loft

Static loft interacts with your attack angle to produce delivered launch. Many golfers are in less loft than suits them, having bought on the assumption that lower loft equals longer.

Face Angle and Lie

The adjustable hosel is a fitting tool, not a feature. We set it, record the setting on the card, and expect you to leave it there.

Shaft

Weight first, then profile, then flex. The driver is where profile shows up most obviously in the numbers, because the club is long enough for the tip section to genuinely matter.

Length

Most off-the-shelf drivers are longer than most golfers should play. An inch shorter typically costs two or three yards of theoretical carry and buys a strike pattern that returns far more than that.

Total Mass and Grip

Head weight, tip weight, counterbalance and grip weight. These are the fine dials and they change feel and tempo more than they change ball flight.

Things That Quietly Ruin a Driver Fitting

Tee Height Drifting

Change the tee height between builds and you have changed attack angle, which changes everything downstream. We use a fixed peg height per comparison and write it on the card.

Too Few Swings

The driver is the most variable club in the bag. Below fifteen tracked swings, the median moves enough between rounds of testing to make the comparison worthless.

Testing Fresh Only

A heavy or long build feels wonderful for six swings. The last block of the session is deliberately run when you are tired, because that is when the golf course finds you.

Ball Choice

Spin differences between premium and distance balls are large enough to change a driver recommendation. We test with whatever you actually play, and if you do not know, that is the first thing to sort out.

Chasing Peak Ball Speed

Peak ball speed is a single-swing statistic and single swings are noise. It is genuinely useful for establishing potential and genuinely useless for choosing between two builds.

Ignoring Spin Axis

Two builds with the same carry can curve entirely differently. Spin axis tilt is where the left-to-right story lives, and it is the number most retail fittings never mention.

Fitted Off the Deck First.
The Tee Comes Second.

Almost every fairway wood fitting anywhere starts on a tee peg, because that is where the club is easiest to hit and the numbers look best. It is also the shot you play least. We do it the other way round.

The Argument

Two Different Clubs Wearing the Same Badge

A three wood struck off a tee and a three wood struck off tight fairway grass are, functionally, two different tests. Off a tee you can catch the ball on a slightly ascending blow, the sole never touches anything, and head design barely matters. Off the deck the sole has to interact with the ground, the strike sits lower on the face, and the centre of gravity location becomes decisive.

Golfers routinely buy a head that produces beautiful numbers on a tee and then discover over the following season that they cannot get it airborne from a fairway. By then the receipt is old and the club lives in the garage.

So the first forty minutes of a woods session here happen off a mat set to fairway firmness. Only once we know what works from the ground do we tee anything up, and the tee test is mostly a check rather than a decision point.

How we structure a session

What Changes Off the Deck

  • Strike moves lower on the face, which lowers launch and raises spin
  • Sole camber and leading edge decide whether the club digs or glides
  • A low, deep centre of gravity helps enormously; a low, forward one does not
  • Shaft tip stiffness matters more because delivery is more variable
  • Head size preference frequently reverses compared to the tee test

What Job Is This Club Doing?

Before we choose a head we settle what the club is for, because three plausible answers lead to three different builds.

Job one

Reaching Par Fives

Distance dominates and the lie is usually decent. A stronger loft with a lower-spinning profile makes sense, and a slightly longer build is defensible because you are rarely under pressure to find a narrow fairway.

Job two

Tee Club on Tight Holes

Then it is a control club and should be fitted like a long driver: shorter, heavier, tighter dispersion, launch tuned for a tee peg. Distance is secondary and we will happily give up ten yards to halve the spread.

Job three

Long Approach From Anywhere

The hardest brief. This club has to work from fairway, light rough and hanging lies. More loft, more sole relief, more forgiveness, and honestly often better served by a five wood than a three.

Three Wood or Five Wood

An unfashionable answer that we give often: many golfers should not carry a three wood at all. If the carry gap between your driver and your best-hit hybrid is under thirty yards, a five wood serves better because it launches higher off the deck and lands softer. The only thing you lose is the number on the sole.

Head and Sole

Head size, face depth, sole width and camber, and where the centre of gravity sits front to back. We test at least four head shapes off the deck before narrowing, because this is where the largest differences live.

Loft

Fairway wood lofts have crept stronger the same way iron lofts have. We fit to delivered launch, which frequently means a golfer ends up in more loft than the number they thought they wanted.

Shaft Weight and Tip

Fairway shafts sit between driver and hybrid in weight. A slightly heavier, tip-stiffer profile than the driver shaft usually improves strike consistency from the ground without costing carry.

Length

Stock three woods are long. Half an inch shorter is one of the most reliable improvements available in this part of the bag, and it costs almost nothing in measured carry.

The Most Mis-Gapped
Four Clubs in Golf.

Between the fairway wood and the longest iron a golfer can genuinely hit, there is a stretch of the bag that gets filled one purchase at a time over several seasons. Almost nobody plans it. It shows up on the ladder as either a doubled-up rung or a twenty-five yard hole.

The Problem

Four Clubs Bought Four Years Apart

Here is a bag we see every week. A three wood from 2018. A four hybrid bought after a bad round in 2021. A five iron that came with the set. A three iron that never leaves the bag because it looks good. Nobody ever asked what carry each was supposed to produce.

Baselined, that bag typically shows two clubs within six yards of each other and a gap somewhere around 195 that nothing covers. The golfer has been managing around it for years by hitting the four hybrid harder, which is exactly the swing that produces their worst miss.

We approach this as one problem with one answer. Start from the longest iron you can hit consistently — measured, not assumed — and from your fairway wood's deck carry. Whatever sits between those two numbers needs filling with the smallest number of clubs that keeps every gap inside about fifteen yards.

Frequently the answer is two clubs where the golfer was carrying four. Those two spare slots then go to a gap wedge and a second fairway wood or a fourth wedge, which is almost always a better use of the space.

Hybrid

Wood-Style Head, Higher Launch

A shallow face and a deeper, lower centre of gravity produce more launch and more forgiveness on low-face strikes. They glide through rough. They are also harder to hit low and harder to control left-to-right for a player who works the ball.

Right for: golfers who struggle to get long clubs airborne, players with moderate speed, anyone playing courses with genuine rough.

Utility Iron

Iron Profile, Flatter Flight

Longer blade length and a thin face give a flatter, more penetrating flight with more control and less spin. They demand a better strike and they punish thin contact severely, but they hold their line in wind in a way hybrids do not.

Right for: faster swingers, players who deliver the club steeply, golfers who play exposed courses in wind.

The Test That Decides It

We give you both in the same loft and look at two things: peak height and the shape of the dispersion. If the utility iron cannot reach a descent angle that will hold a green, it is the wrong club regardless of how good it feels. If the hybrid balloons and drifts right, the same logic applies in reverse. The numbers settle this in about fifteen minutes and they settle it differently for different golfers.

What We Set After the Head Is Chosen

Length

Stock hybrids are often built to a length that sits awkwardly between the iron it replaces and the wood above it. We set length to produce a smooth swingweight and strike progression, which usually means shorter than stock.

Shaft Choice

Hybrid shafts are a genuine fork in the road: an iron-weight shaft makes the club feel like the set it sits above, a wood-weight shaft makes it feel like the fairway wood below. Both are defensible and it comes down to which transition you would rather feel.

Loft Setting

Where the head is adjustable, we use loft to place the rung exactly rather than accepting whatever the sole says. The number stamped on the club is nearly meaningless in this part of the bag anyway.

Lie Angle

Hybrids are commonly built upright to help golfers who slice, which is fine unless you do not slice. We read lie from strike marks like any other club.

Swingweight

The top of the bag is where swingweight progression most often goes wrong, because clubs from three different sources sit next to each other. We match the progression across the whole stretch.

Turf Test

Every hybrid gets tested from a mat set soft and from one set firm. Sole width that works beautifully in April can dig badly in August, and central Ohio gives you both within one season.

The Irons Are the Ladder.
Everything Else Hangs Off Them.

Your irons decide the shape of your whole bag. Once the rungs between the six and the pitching wedge are honest and evenly spaced, the top of the bag and the wedges become straightforward problems. Get them wrong and no amount of driver work fixes the scorecard.

The Rule on the Wall

Seven Yards Minimum, Fifteen Yards Maximum

Rhea brought this rule with her from teaching and it now governs how we build sets. No two clubs should sit closer than about seven yards apart in median carry, and no gap should run wider than about fifteen.

Closer than seven and the two clubs are functionally the same club; you have spent money on a duplicate and given yourself a decision that does not matter. Wider than fifteen and there is a distance on the golf course that you cannot cover with a full swing, which means manufacturing a three-quarter shot under pressure.

The rule bends for individuals. A golfer with a very repeatable strike can live with narrower gaps. A high-speed player may accept eighteen at the top of the set because the alternative is carrying a club they cannot use. But it is the starting frame, and most sets we baseline violate it somewhere.

The commonest violation, by a distance, is two adjacent mid irons that carry within four yards of each other because the lofts have drifted. Bending them back is a forty-five dollar job and it is frequently the single most valuable thing that happens in a session.

How Many Irons Do You Actually Need?

The set that comes in a box is a manufacturing decision, not a fitting decision. We routinely finish a session recommending fewer irons than the golfer walked in with.

Where Irons Stop Working

For most amateur golfers there is a loft above which a long iron produces less carry and worse dispersion than a hybrid of the same loft. We find that crossover empirically, in the bay, rather than assuming it sits at the four iron for everybody.

Middle

Blending Designs

A blended set — more forgiving long irons, more compact scoring irons — works well provided the transition is managed. Done carelessly it produces a lofting discontinuity right where you least want one.

Bottom

Where Irons Hand Over

Modern pitching wedges are strong enough that the gap from PW to a fifty-six degree sand wedge is often thirty yards. That gap has to be filled and it is the reason gap wedges exist. We settle it as part of the iron session, not as an afterthought.

What Gets Measured and Set

Lie angle

Read From Marks, Not Charts

Static wrist-to-floor is a starting point and nothing more. We read lie from sole marks on a board with your normal shoes on, at your normal speed. A degree of lie error moves a mid iron shot four to six yards offline, which is more than most golfers assume.

Length

Strike Beats Theory

Longer irons theoretically produce more speed. In practice, past a certain point, they produce worse contact and lose distance. We test length changes in quarter-inch steps and let the strike map decide.

Shaft

Weight, Then Profile

Iron shaft weight has more effect on tempo and strike than flex letter does. We work through weight bands first and only then look at where the shaft is soft along its length.

Swingweight

Consistency Across the Set

Whether every club sits on the same swingweight point matters less than whether the progression is smooth. We publish the tolerance we hold rather than claiming perfection.

Turf Interaction Gets Tested Too

Sole width, bounce and leading edge design determine how an iron behaves through the ground, and central Ohio courses swing from soft in April to concrete in August. We use a variable-firmness turf tray so a set that works on wet spring ground does not become unplayable in a dry July.

The Bottom of the Ladder
Deserves the Same Rigour.

Golfers will spend two hours choosing a driver they hit twelve times a round and twenty minutes choosing three wedges they hit thirty times. We do it the other way round, starting with the numbers and only then talking about bounce.

Order of Operations

Carry Rungs Before Grind

Most wedge conversations start with grind and bounce because those are the interesting words. We start with distance, because a wedge set that leaves a twenty-five yard hole at ninety yards will cost you more shots than a slightly wrong sole ever could.

The problem is structural. Pitching wedge lofts have strengthened dramatically over two decades — a modern set PW is often 43 or 44 degrees where it used to be 48. Meanwhile sand wedges are still 54 to 56. That leaves a gap of ten to twelve degrees between two clubs, which translates to twenty-five or thirty yards of carry with nothing in between.

So the first half hour of a wedge session is spent finding your actual full-swing carry for the pitching wedge and working down from there in even steps. Four degrees between wedges is the usual answer. Sometimes it is five at the top and four below. Occasionally, for a golfer who plays a lot of partial shots, we spread it wider and let feel fill the gaps.

Then the Sole

Bounce Matched to How You Deliver the Club

Bounce is the angle between the leading edge and the lowest point of the sole. It stops the club digging. How much you need depends on your attack angle and on what you are hitting off.

Steep delivery

More Bounce

If you take a deep divot and deliver the club sharply downward, a high-bounce sole keeps the leading edge from burying. Golfers with this pattern who play low-bounce wedges chunk pitch shots and blame their technique.

Shallow delivery

Less Bounce

A sweeper who barely brushes the turf needs less. Too much bounce and the sole makes contact first, the leading edge rides up, and the ball is bladed across the green. Also blamed on technique, also actually equipment.

Middle ground

Grind Does the Rest

Relief ground off the heel and toe lets a higher-bounce wedge be opened and laid flat without raising the leading edge. It is how one club serves both a square full swing and an open-faced greenside shot.

What Central Ohio Turf Wants

Our courses run soft and lush from April into June, firm up hard through July and August, then soften again in the autumn. Bunker sand across the metro area tends to be coarser and firmer than the fine sand you find further south, which argues for slightly less bounce out of the sand than a national rule of thumb would suggest. We test on a variable-firmness tray for exactly this reason: a sole that is right in May can be wrong in August, and we would rather find the compromise deliberately.

Details That Get Overlooked

Five Wedge Specs Nobody Checks

Lie Angle

Wedges are swung slower and more upright than mid irons, and a lie that suits your seven iron is often two degrees off for your sand wedge. It is a cheap fix and it straightens a lot of missed greens from inside a hundred yards.

Shaft Weight

Wedges frequently ship with heavier shafts than the set they join, on the theory that heavier equals more control. For a golfer already in lightweight iron shafts, that discontinuity at the bottom of the bag ruins the feel of the transition.

Length Progression

Some golfers benefit from all their wedges being the same length rather than stepping down. It makes the setup identical across four clubs. It also changes swingweight, which has to be corrected on the bench.

Groove Condition

Wedge grooves wear out. A wedge with sixty rounds on it holds meaningfully less spin than a new one, especially in the wet. We measure groove depth rather than guessing from how it looks.

The Set PW Question

Should your gap wedge match your irons or your wedges? If it is going to be used mostly for full swings, matching the iron set keeps the ladder consistent. If it is a scoring club you will open and manipulate, a specialist wedge head with proper sole relief serves better. We decide it from how you describe using the club, not from a rule.

Putter Sessions · 60 minutes

Twenty Minutes of Measuring
Before You Roll a Ball.

Putter fitting is mostly geometry. Get the eyes in the right place relative to the line, get the loft matched to how much the shaft leans at impact, and stop treating an arcing stroke as a fault to be corrected. Most of the rest is preference, and preference is legitimate.

Starting Point

Length First, and It Is Usually Wrong

The standard retail putter is thirty-five inches. It has been thirty-five inches for decades, for reasons of manufacturing convenience rather than human anatomy. A large majority of the golfers we measure are better served somewhere between thirty-two and thirty-four.

Length that is too long forces the hands away from the body and pushes the eyes inside the target line, which makes the golfer aim right and compensate by pulling. It also makes the putter sit on its toe, so the effective loft and the face angle at address are both wrong before the stroke begins.

We measure where your eyes actually sit with a laser line, then set length so the eyes land on or marginally inside the ball. Then we check the sole sits flat. Then, and only then, do we start rolling putts.

Shortening a putter is a fifteen-dollar bench job. Together with a regrip it is comfortably the highest-value change available anywhere in a golf bag per dollar spent, and it is the reason a proportion of putter sessions end with the golfer keeping the putter they arrived with.

Loft and Roll

Why Your Putter Has Loft at All

A ball at rest sits slightly down in the grass. Loft on a putter face lifts it out of that depression so it can begin rolling rather than bouncing. Too little and the ball is driven into the turf and hops; too much and it launches, skids further and takes longer to settle onto its line.

The complication is that the loft delivered at impact is static loft plus or minus your shaft lean. A golfer who presses their hands well forward is delivering two or three degrees less than the number stamped on the sole. That golfer needs a higher-lofted putter, not a lower one, which is counterintuitive enough that it catches almost everybody out.

We measure lean, calculate delivered loft, and bend the putter to suit. It is a ten-minute bench job and the difference in how quickly the ball settles is visible on the roll surface without any instrumentation at all.

The Arc Argument

Every putting stroke arcs to some degree, because the club is swinging around a body. How much it arcs varies enormously between golfers and it is largely a function of posture and shaft plane rather than of technique.

Our position is that the head should be matched to the stroke rather than the stroke retrained to the head. A strong arc pairs with more toe hang; a nearly straight stroke pairs with a face-balanced mallet. Fighting your natural arc with the wrong hosel configuration produces exactly the inconsistency the golfer came in to solve.

The Other Dials

Weight, Grip and Head Shape

Head Weight and Green Speed

Heavier heads suit slower greens and shorter strokes; lighter heads suit fast greens where touch matters more than momentum. Most central Ohio public courses run in the eights and nines through summer, which sits comfortably in the middle of the range.

Grip Size and Shape

Larger grips reduce wrist action, which helps golfers whose miss comes from a flicky release and hurts golfers who rely on feel. There is no correct answer. We give you three sizes and look at what happens to face angle at impact.

Head Shape and Alignment

Blade, mid-mallet or mallet is partly a moment-of-inertia decision and partly an aiming one. We check where you actually aim each shape with a laser, because a putter you aim correctly beats a putter that is theoretically more forgiving.

Distance Control Is the Real Test

Nobody three-putts because they missed the line by half an inch. They three-putt because the first putt finished six feet short or eight feet long. The last twenty minutes of a putter session is spent on lag putting from thirty and forty feet, and if a configuration does not improve your leave distance there, it does not go home with you regardless of how good it looks.
