Ladder Notes

Working Notes From the Bay,
Not Content Marketing.

Six pieces, written slowly, about the three subjects that come up most often at this bench: how to build gaps out of launch data, why carry and total are different animals, and what genuinely happens to a golf ball in thinner air.

Building Gaps From Carry Medians

Why the median beats the average, how many tracked swings it takes before that median stops wandering, and what a defensible rung spacing looks like through the middle of a set.

Where a Set Doubles Up

Two clubs carrying the same distance is more common than a hole in the ladder and far harder to notice. How to find a doubled-up rung and the three causes behind almost all of them.

Carry Is the Honest Number

Total distance is a property of the golf course rather than of your golf swing. An argument for putting carry on the yardage card and treating rollout as a separate, seasonal footnote.

Rollout Across an Ohio Season

The same seven iron finishes eleven yards apart in May and August without the swing changing at all. What we measured across one season on four central Ohio courses.

Air Density and the Mountain Trip

What actually changes when a Columbus golfer plays at six thousand feet, why the popular ten percent rule falls apart in the short irons, and how to prepare a bag for a week in thin air.

Altitude-Adjusted Yardage Cards

A practical method for producing a second column on your ladder for a destination you have never played, using nothing more than elevation, temperature and your existing carry numbers.

Why We Write These

Because the Same Questions Keep Arriving

Every one of these pieces started as a conversation in a bay that took twenty minutes and happened again the following week. Writing it down once means a golfer can read it before they book, arrive with the concept already understood, and spend their session on their own numbers instead of on the theory.

Nothing here is sponsored, nothing links to a product, and none of it is an argument for buying anything. If a note makes you decide you do not need a fitting, it has done its job.

Three running themes
  • Gapping with launch data. What the monitor is telling you and what it is not.
  • Carry versus total. Which number belongs on the card and why.
  • Altitude and air. Elevation, temperature, humidity and the yardages they move.
