Altitude-Adjusted Yardage Cards
You cannot test at a course you have never visited. You can, however, build a perfectly serviceable second column for it before you leave, using three pieces of information you already have.
The previous note argued that thin air does not add a uniform percentage to every club. This one is the practical follow-up: how to actually produce the adjusted numbers, either by asking us or by doing it yourself on the back of an envelope.
The method is not precise. It will get you within two or three yards on most clubs, which is comfortably good enough to stop you flying greens on the first three holes of a trip.
What You Need
- Your carry ladder, per club, from wherever you normally play. Carry, not total.
- The elevation of your home course and of the destination. Both are one search away.
- Typical temperature at the destination during your visit, and what it was when your ladder was measured.
That is the whole input list. If your ladder is in total distance rather than carry, this will not work properly, because rollout at the destination depends on ground conditions you know nothing about yet.
Step One: The Elevation Adjustment
The working figure we use is two per cent of carry per thousand feet of elevation gain, applied to a mid iron. It is close enough across the range most golfers travel to.
So a move from 780 feet in Columbus to 6,200 feet at a Colorado resort is a gain of about 5,400 feet, which gives roughly eleven per cent on a mid iron.
Step Two: The Club Gradient
Now spread that figure across the bag, because the long clubs gain more and the short clubs gain less. The multipliers we use are these:

Step Three: Temperature
Add or subtract one per cent per ten degrees Fahrenheit of difference between the conditions your ladder was measured in and the conditions you expect to play in. Warmer air is thinner, so warmer means further.
If your ladder was built indoors at 68 degrees and you will be playing mountain golf at 55 in the mornings, that is minus 1.3 per cent applied uniformly. It is a small correction and it is worth making because it partly offsets the elevation gain in early tee times.
A Worked Example
Take a golfer with a 155 yard seven iron and a 97 yard sand wedge, ladder measured at 780 feet and 70 degrees, travelling to 6,200 feet where mornings run about 52 degrees.
- Elevation gain 5,420 feet, so about eleven per cent on a mid iron.
- Temperature 18 degrees cooler, so minus 1.8 per cent.
- Net mid-iron adjustment: about plus 9.2 per cent.
- Seven iron: 155 × 1.092 = 169 yards.
- Sand wedge: multiplier 0.60, so 9.2 × 0.6 = 5.5 per cent. 97 × 1.055 = 102 yards.
- Driver: multiplier 1.15, so 10.6 per cent. 243 becomes 269 yards.
Write those in a second column beside your normal numbers. Do not replace your normal numbers — you are going home eventually.
What This Method Ignores
Being honest about the limits is part of the exercise.
- Humidity. Genuinely affects density but the effect is small, usually under one per cent. Ignore it.
- Wind. Mountain courses are frequently windy and wind swamps everything else on this page. No card survives a three-club breeze.
- Elevation change on the shot itself. Mountain holes drop and climb. A hundred feet of drop is worth roughly six or seven yards of playing distance, and that is a per-hole adjustment no card can carry.
- Firmness. Everything on this page is carry. Mountain turf is often very firm and rollout will surprise you separately.
- Your own adaptation. By day three you will be swinging differently because your brain has recalibrated. That is not a modelling failure, it is just golf.
Going the Other Way
The same arithmetic runs in reverse for a winter trip to somewhere at or near sea level. A Columbus golfer heading to a coastal course in Florida in February is losing about 1.5 per cent from elevation and gaining a couple of per cent from warmth, which roughly cancels — but the air is also considerably more humid and, more importantly, they have not swung a club in three months.
For that trip the honest advice is not a spreadsheet. It is to arrive a day early and hit balls.
