Twenty Questions,
Answered Without Hedging.
These are the ones that come up at the desk. If yours is not here, call the shop and ask — we would rather spend five minutes on the phone than have you book a session you do not need.
01I am a twenty-four handicap. Is a fitting wasted on me?
It is the opposite. A low handicap has usually already removed the worst mismatches from the bag through sheer trial and error. A twenty-four is far more likely to be playing three clubs that go the same distance and a shaft two flexes away from sensible. The gains are larger and cheaper at your end of the scale, not smaller.
02Do I have to buy clubs from you?
No, and about one visit in five ends with no purchase at all. You keep the printed ladder and the spec sheet regardless. Some golfers use it to buy secondhand elsewhere, which we consider a completely legitimate use of the session fee they paid us.
03Why do you use the median instead of the average?
An average is pulled around by a single flushed shot or a single thin one. The median is the middle of your tracked swings and barely moves when you add one outlier. Since club selection on a golf course is a decision about the typical shot, the typical shot is the number worth printing.
04How many swings do you need per club?
Twelve minimum for irons, closer to twenty for the driver and wedges where strike varies more. Below about ten the median wanders by five or six yards between sessions, which makes any comparison between two builds meaningless.
05Is indoor fitting as good as outdoors?
For everything except your own confidence, yes, provided the monitor is the right type and the operator understands its limits. Indoors gives us repeatable conditions and no wind, which is exactly what a controlled comparison needs. We correct carry to a stated air condition so the numbers travel outdoors intact.
06How long does a build take?
Seven to twelve working days once components are in hand. Back-orders can push that out and we will tell you the honest date rather than a hopeful one. Bench-only work like a bend or a regrip is often same day if the schedule is clear.
07Can you fit me if I already own clubs I like?
Frequently the best outcome. A bend, a reshaft, a length change and a regrip on a set you already trust costs a fraction of new equipment and can close the same gaps. We would rather adjust than replace when adjusting works.
08What is the difference between carry and total on your card?
Carry is where the ball lands. Total is where it stops, which depends on the firmness of the ground and is therefore a property of the golf course rather than of your swing. We put carry on the primary column and show rollout separately as a seasonal estimate.
09My yardages drop in the autumn. Is something wrong?
Nothing is wrong. Colder, denser air costs carry, and in central Ohio the difference between a humid July round and a crisp late-October round is commonly six to nine yards on a mid iron. That is why your ladder is normalised to a stated condition and comes with a cold-weather column.
10I am going to Colorado in September. Do my numbers change?
Substantially. Thinner air at altitude adds carry, but not by a uniform percentage across the bag, and the wedges gain proportionally less than the long clubs. Ask when you book and we will add an adjusted column to your ladder for that destination.
11Do you fit left-handed golfers?
Yes, both bays are set up for either side and the component library carries left-handed options across the lines we stock. Head selection for left-handed golfers is narrower industry-wide, which we will be honest about rather than pretending otherwise.
12What about juniors?
Sizing sessions twice a year at half rate, with cut-down builds done labour-free. The aim is keeping a growing golfer in properly proportioned equipment without their parents buying a new set every twelve months.
13Do you take trade-ins?
No. We are not a retailer and we do not hold used stock. We will tell you honestly what your existing set is worth and point you at the places locally that buy fairly.
14What if the new clubs do not work?
Come back. We re-run the clubs against the ladder on file at no charge, and if the build is at fault we correct it at no charge. If your swing has changed since the session, we will say so plainly and quote for the adjustment.
15Are you tied to any manufacturer?
No. Nobody holds a stake, nobody sets a target, and no line gets shelf priority. The consequence is that we do not always hold every current head from every brand, which we regard as a fair trade.
16Can I bring my own shaft or head?
Yes, at standard labour rates. We will also tell you if what arrived is not what the label claims. Counterfeit shafts are a real problem and we see two or three a year.
17How far in advance should I book?
Saturdays through spring run about three weeks out. Midweek in July or August usually needs a week. December through February the bays are quiet and you can often get in within a few days.
18Why are you closed on Wednesdays?
Wednesday is build day. The bench needs uninterrupted hours to do assembly, curing and calibration properly, and trying to squeeze that around appointments produced sloppier work. It has been this way since 2015.
19Do you fit for tournament players?
We fit whoever books. A handful of club champions and a couple of collegiate players come here, but the majority of our appointments are golfers between fifteen and thirty who play twice a month, and the process is identical for everyone.
20What should I bring?
Your whole bag including the clubs you never hit, the shoes you actually play in, and your glove. Eat beforehand. Three hours of tracked swings is more tiring than it sounds.
Ask Before You Book
Nobody at this shop earns a commission, which means there is no downside for us in telling you that a session would not help. If your clubs are three years old, correctly specced and gapped sensibly, we will say so on the phone and save you the fee.
The most useful five-minute call usually starts with what you play, how old it is, and which distance on the course you find yourself stuck between.
